At our paediatric Occupational Therapy and Speech clinic, we often hear the term “sensory issues” used to describe a child’s behaviour or responses to everyday experiences. While this language is common, it can sometimes overlook the complexity and strengths within each child’s sensory system.
Instead, we like to think about sensory processing differences. This shift in perspective helps us better understand each child’s unique way of experiencing the world and how we can support them to feel safe, regulated, and ready to engage.
What is sensory processing?
Sensory processing refers to how the nervous system receives, organises, and responds to information from the body and the environment. This includes:
- Touch
- Movement and balance
- Body awareness (proprioception)
- Sounds
- Visual input
- Taste and smell
Every child processes sensory input differently. These differences are not problems to fix, but patterns to understand.
Looking beyond “issues”
When we reframe sensory processing as differences rather than deficits, we begin to ask more helpful questions:
- What is this child’s body telling us?
- What sensory input helps them feel calm and organised?
- What environments or tasks feel overwhelming or challenging?
For example:
- A child who avoids loud environments may have a nervous system that is highly sensitive to sound
- A child who seeks movement may be using this input to stay alert and focused
- A child who struggles to sit still may need more body-based input before engaging in seated tasks
These behaviours are not “naughty” or “non-compliant”. They are meaningful responses based on how a child’s nervous system is functioning in that moment.
Strengths in sensory differences
Sensory processing differences often come with strengths:
- Strong awareness of environmental changes
- Deep engagement in preferred sensory experiences
- Creativity and unique ways of interacting with the world
- Persistence in seeking input that supports regulation
By recognising these strengths, we can build on what the child already does well.
Creating a supportive environment
Rather than expecting children to adapt to environments that do not meet their needs, we can make small, meaningful adjustments to support their sensory systems.
1. Consider the child’s regulation first
Before focusing on behaviour, ask:
Is this child calm and ready to engage?
If not, supporting their sensory needs comes first.
2. Offer sensory supports throughout the day
These may include:
- Movement breaks such as jumping, climbing, or pushing activities
- Deep pressure input like hugs, squeezing a pillow, or using weighted items
- Quiet spaces for retreat when overwhelmed
- Fidget tools or oral motor tools to support focus
3. Adjust the environment
Small changes can make a big difference:
- Reduce background noise where possible
- Provide clear visual supports and predictable routines
- Allow flexible seating options
- Break tasks into manageable steps
4. Follow the child’s cues
Children will often show us what they need:
- Moving away may mean “this is too much”
- Seeking input may mean “I need more”
- Avoidance may signal overwhelm, not refusal
- When we respond to these cues, we support trust and regulation.
How OT and Speech work together
Sensory processing plays a key role in many areas of development, including:
- Attention and learning
- Emotional regulation
- Communication and social interaction
- Play and participation in daily activities
Occupational Therapists support the sensory and body-based aspects of regulation and participation, while Speech Pathologists support communication, understanding, and social connection. Together, we create a holistic approach that supports the whole child.
A strengths-based takeaway
Every child’s sensory system is unique. When we move beyond the idea of “sensory issues” and instead understand sensory processing differences, we can better support children to:
- Feel safe in their bodies
- Engage in meaningful activities
- Build confidence and independence
Sometimes what looks like behaviour is actually a child communicating that their nervous system needs support first.
