Movement is Learning: Why Fidgeting is Functional

How many times have we heard the phrase, “Sit still and concentrate”? For decades, the idea that learning requires stillness has shaped classrooms and homes. But here’s the truth: movement is not a distraction; it’s a tool for learning.

Children are wired to move. When they wiggle, fidget, spin, bounce, or rock, their nervous systems are often doing exactly what they need to stay alert, regulated, and engaged. In Occupational Therapy, we call this functional movement and it’s not something we try to eliminate. It’s something we support.

Why Kids Move When They Learn

Movement is directly linked to brain development and attention. For many children, especially those who are neurodivergent, sensory seeking, or diagnosed with ADHD or Autism, movement:

  • Helps maintain focus
  • Supports body awareness and coordination
  • Reduces stress and anxiety
  • Keeps their sensory system in balance

So, when a child is tapping their foot, chewing a pencil, rolling on the carpet, or fiddling with a toy they’re not misbehaving. They’re self-regulating.

Challenging the “Sit Still” Myth

It’s a common misunderstanding that stillness equals attention. But for some kids, being told to stop moving actually increases their dysregulation, making it harder to concentrate, communicate, or stay emotionally in control.
Expecting all children to sit with their hands in their lap and eyes forward doesn’t honour the diverse ways brains and bodies learn. Instead, we can reframe fidgeting and movement as functional behaviours, not distractions.

How Movement Helps Learning

Here are some ways movement can support attention and engagement:

  • Fidget tools (e.g., squishy toys, putty, chewables) provide tactile feedback
  • Seating options (wobble stools, movement cushions, standing desks) allow active sitting
  • Movement breaks (jumping, heavy work, animal walks) help reset the sensory system
  • Body-based learning (clapping syllables, acting out stories) links movement with memory
  • Walking while talking during therapy or learning can support language flow and regulation

Supporting Movement at Home and School

Whether you’re a parent, teacher, or therapist, here are some easy ways to support functional movement:
At Home:

  • Set up a “fidget basket” with safe tools your child can access
  • Let them stand, pace, or rock while doing homework
  • Offer movement before or during transitions (e.g., crab walks to the bath!)
  • Model your own regulation strategies: “I need a quick stretch before I can focus again”

At School:

  • Build in brain breaks every 15–30 minutes
  • Use movement-friendly seating options
  • Allow quiet fidgeting during lessons
  • Create classroom jobs that involve lifting, pushing, or organising (aka heavy work)
  • Collaborate with your OT to match strategies to each student’s needs

Final Thoughts

Fidgeting isn’t a flaw. It’s feedback. Children are telling us, through their bodies, what they need in order to be present and engaged. When we honour that instead of fighting it we open up more meaningful and inclusive learning experiences for all.
Movement is not the opposite of learning.
