This R U OK?Day, we would like to take a moment to check in with the parents and carers supporting children with additional needs.
Supporting your child may involve attending appointments, communicating with educators and health professionals, completing paperwork, advocating for their needs and helping them through everyday challenges. Among all of these responsibilities, it can be easy for your own wellbeing to receive less attention.
There may be times when things feel difficult or overwhelming. During these moments, remember that you are doing your best while navigating a lot, and it is okay to lean on others for support along the way.
You do not need to have everything figured out. You do not need to manage every challenge on your own. Asking for help, taking a break or telling someone that you are not okay is not a sign that you are failing. It is a way of looking after yourself.
This R U OK?Day, we encourage family members, friends and members of the community to check in with the parents and carers in their lives. Ask how they are going, listen without judgement and offer practical support where you can.
To all the parents and carers in our NSPOT community, your wellbeing matters too. You deserve to feel heard, supported and cared for.
